Kinematic Chain
Kinematic Chain:-
The combination of kinematic pair in
such a way each link form a pair and the relative motion between them
completely or successfully constrained motion.

Types of Kinematic chain
I. Four bar chain:-
It is the combination of four kinematic pair and the relative
motion between them is completely and successfully constrained motion.
There are three types of four-bar chain.
a) Beam engine:-
It is also
known as the crank lever mechanism. The use of this mechanism is to convert rotary
motion into reciprocating motion.
b) Engine Indicator:-
A device
for indicating that a motor vehicle is about to turn left or right.
c) Double crank chain:-
It is also
known as the locomotive mechanism. The opposite links of the mechanism are equal.
The use of this mechanism is transmitting the motion one wheel to another
wheel.
II Single slider crank:-
Single slider crank chain is a
modification of four-bar chain 1 sliding pair and 3 turning pairs. It is used
to convert rotary motion in reciprocating motion and vice-versa.
There are five inversions of a single slider crank chain.
a) Pendulum pump:-
It is also known as a bull engine. This inversion is obtained by fixing of the cylinder.
Example:-
Feedwater to the boiler(duplex pump).
b) Oscillating cylinder engine:-
It is
used to convert reciprocating motion into rotary motion.
c) Rotary internal combustion engine:-
It is also known as Genome engine. It
consists of seven cylinders in one plane and all revolve around the fixed center.
d) Crank and slotted lever quick return mechanism:-
A connecting
link 5 connects the ram to the slotted lever. As the crank rotates the slider
will reciprocate in the slot. This mechanism widely used in shaping machine,
slotting machine, etc.
e) Whit worth quick return mechanism:-
This
mechanism is mostly used in the planning machine.
III Double slider crank chain:-
A kinematic chain which consists of two turning pairs and two sliding pairs which is known as double slider crank chain.
There are three types of double slider crank chain.
a) Scotch-yoke mechanism:-
This
mechanism used to convert rotary motion into reciprocating motion.
b) Oldham’s coupling:-
This
is used to transmit the motion from one shaft to another such that the center
lines of the shaft are offset by a small distance. This coupling is used to connect two parallel shafts.
c) Elliptical trammels:-
It is used to
draw an ellipse.
