Up milling and Down milling
Up Milling:-
Also called conventional milling.
v Wheel
rotation opposite of the feed.
v The chip formed
by each cutter tooth starts out very thin and increases its thickness.
v The length of
the chip is relatively longer.
v Tool life is
relatively shorter.
v Need more clamping force to hold the work part still.
v Need more clamping force to hold the work part still.
Down milling:-
Also called climb milling.
v Wheel rotation is parallel to the feed.
v The chip formed by each cutter tooth starts out thick
and leaves out thin.
v The length of the chip is relatively short.
v Tool life is relatively longer.
v Need less clamping force to hold the work part still.
